Mesothelioma Diagnosis
Mesothelioma is a fatal form of cancer that is typically caused by asbestos exposure and for which a curative treatment has not yet been found. Asbestos is a highly toxic substance that can be harmful when it is ingested, inhaled or handled. Although asbestos was widely banned for use in the 1970’s, some products, buildings, schools and works sites still contain asbestos.
Many cases of mesothelioma don’t become evident or diagnosed until years or decades after initial exposure. A mesothelioma diagnosis is often obtained through a careful assessment of clinical and radiological findings. A tissue biopsy usually is taken to confirm that the patient does, in fact, have mesothelioma.
How Do Doctors Detect Mesothelioma?
A review of the patient's medical history, including a full history of their asbestos exposure, is often taken when symptoms first arise. In addition, a full physical exam with x-rays of the chest and abdomen, and lung function tests are taken before a mesothelioma diagnosis can be confirmed.
There are several imging techniques that have proven to be useful when mesothelioma is suspected. The presence of pleural effusion together with a possible history of secondary or work-related exposure is usually necessary for a mesothelioma diagnosis.
While imaging techniques are often extremely valuable in assessing the possibility of cancer in patients, a definitive mesothelioma diagnosis is typically established through fluid diagnosis or a tissue biopsy.
Various Ways to Determine a Mesothelioma Diagnosis

X-ray - By conducting a chest x-ray of the patient, doctors can see if there is any fluid build-up, also known as Pleural effusion. Signs of pleural plaques and scarring in the lungs are also indicators.
Computed Tomography (CT) - CT scans are often used to determine and define the pleural effusion, as well as the pleural thickening and any chest wall invasions Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - During the process of a mesothelioma diagnosis, MRI scans can help confirm the presence of tumors before aggressive treatment begins
